I never did have a problem with the tape adapter in the Merc, it was very acceptable. Unfortunately my current car (Seat Toledo) does not have a tape player, I bought a RoadTrip so I can charge up my iPhone and also broadcast on FM, but it's been a bit mixed so far. There's always a hiss in the background and the radio doesn't seem to be able to hold onto the signal very well. I had the same situation previously in my Lupo with an iTrip, so I suspect it's a general problem with VW Group radios. The radio in my Mini was great - there almost never any interference on that. So I think perhaps radio upgrade might be on the cards...

I've found :

a) FM ones work acceptably well...

b) Tape ones suck. There is too much hiss and crap.

You should just shell out for another radio; you could probably get one with a line in feed for not.very.much :)
