Reading Matters

I finished reading “Lucky Man” by Michael J. Fox today, it’s a good book, and his descriptions of what life is like suffering from Parkinson’s really make you understand what a terrible thing diseases like that are. However, the earlier parts of the book concerning his drinking problems I don’t quite understand. It all seems to be about constant self-doubt. While I do sometimes worry about work, I am usually pretty confident in myself, whereas Michael, and seemingly a lot of other actors seem to suffer from terrible self-doubt about themselves. I wonder why that is?

All War, All The Time

Watching all this coverage on TV about the War in Iraq is a bit odd really. It’s like the ulitmate reality TV show – short of having daily votes on what part of Iraq we should be bombing next. This got me thinking about a few potential TV shows. First we have Big Brother Iraq, where Saddam is in a house with a load of his doubles (many of whom could be comically bad doubles, like not having a mustache or something) and every day we get to vote for which one is taken out and shot. The winner gets fired from a big cannon. Another could be like Stars in their Eyes, but called Saddam in their Eyes, where Iraqi peasants get to dress up as their leader and gas some peasants. Oh yes.

Flat out baby, yeah!

Phew! I’ve been pretty much busy for over a week now without a break (I don’t call karting a break, it’s hardcore action!) Finished my C++ coursework earlier today, but too late to go up to Elvington airfield for a play in Jamie’s Westfield. How cool would that have been? Unfortunately I had too many fiddly bits to finish off, and at the moment work comes before all else. It seemed to work fine though – apart from the machines on campus had a habit of screwing up how the program works. I think that’s non-platform independence for you. The lecturer told me it’s fine as long as it works on the system it was built on, so hopefully I should score 60-70% on that. I’ve got ages to do the second coursework now, so I’ll be aiming for 70-80% on that I think.

I also went down to Dorset for the last race of BUKC 2003, and in fact my last student championship race. It all went wrong on turn 1 unfortunately – Some people ran into the back of me, and while I kept it under control and pointing the right way, the bashing the kart took made the HT lead come out of the spark plug cap leading to one dead engine. That meant being pushed round to the pits for repairs and recovering on track to last place. I managed to pull myself all the way up to 30th by the end of the race, but my lap times were rubbish. I love Clay, but I don’t seem to do that well on it. Although I wasn’t exactly highly motivated to poush for 30th when the worst results is dropped and they don’t come much worse than that. However, I am booked to take part in a karting event with Mum’s floor at work, and there are cash prizes, so hopefully I should take that pretty easily. It’s quite a nice circuit for an indoor place too. There is also Varsity next term, which we are going to win. No ifs, no buts, we are winning that.

My plan at the moment is to have a lie in as a slight reward for the amount of stuff I’ve been doing this week, and then watch qualifying on ITV (although it’s not live, what are they playing at? What’s wrong with ITV2? Too busy showing an Emmerdale omnibus at 6am?!) and then collect loads of reading material to go through over the holidays in between dissertation and coursework. Easy!

So Vain!

In a bout of vainess (is that how you spell that? More n’s perhaps?) I’m on the hunt for a pair of glasses, but I can’t find anywhere on the Internet to buy a decent pair of geek glasses. Like black rimmed things, you know? I’ve got a plastic pair, but they’ve got blue lenses, so I think I look like some sort of bohemian with those on. Maybe they’d go well with the red hair? hehe.

Is that Red Hair?

I’ve decided to dye my hair red for Comic Relief. It’s a good opportunity to raise some money for charity, and a good excuse to change my hair colour – something I want to do before the baldness sets in! Anyway, please sponsor me by clicking on the link on the side, or the logo above. Photos will be uploaded once the deed is done!

Anyway, in other things I’ve been doing I went karting on Saturday for Round 4 of BUKC, and it was the first race of the new TITS format, where each team member gets a 30 minute race, rather than 4 people doing a 2 hour race. We had quite a good strategy of stopping in the first couple of laps – only Nick came close to running out of fuel, but he didn’t loose any places as a result. Worst thing of the whole day was my race – I was in 12th on the last lap, which would have been our best result, and on the last corner I stupidly launched it over a kerb at the chicane, straight into a tyre wall. Arse. Everyone else lost time through getting punted off or black flags, which left us 19th, which isn’t too good. Still, the next round is Clay Pigeon, which should be ace!

Finally, the reason I’m up at 4:30am is that I watched the two qualifying sessions for the first GP of season, and the GP, meaning 3 days in a row of going to bed at about 5am, meaning I’m still pretty awake at the moment. I shall be off to bed for a 9am lecture shortly, but I think the plan shall be go to sleep, go to lecture, go back to sleep until about 12, and then get a proper nights sleep tomorrow. The GP itself was a pretty good race, and I was a bit disappointed that Montoya threw it off – he was easily on the best strategy for the day. David Coulthard won in the end, which I wasn’t really to happy about as I don’t rate him very well – it took most of the top drivers having at least one off to get the win, so nevermind. Anyway, to bed…

Isis is Good(tm)

I went to Isis this evening for the first time in my life and had a brilliant time. Although I am slightly the worse for wear now, and I’m sure I’ll feel near death (again) in the morning it was worth it. While I was in the VIP section (one of the perks of being Mtorsport Club President) some girl sidled up to me at the bar, and damn. If I was single, I’d have been attempting to get in there like a shot. I mean a ludicrously short skirt, legs to die for, and garters. Fuck me. Still, it nice to think that I can still get girls to come on to me (or rather, it’s nice to think girls think they can get a drink out of me, but we’ll keep quiet about that idea ok?). I think I shall definately be trying to get Fran into a similar outfit, oh yes. Mmm… Oh and the noise from last night was the gate hitting the wall outside below my room. I’m a moron sometimes…

Feeling Guilty

Fran rung me up earlier during a motorsport meeting and I couldn’t have a chat with her because I had no signal where I was. Realised after that I haven’t really spoken to her since Sunday evening, so I felt a bit guilty, although I suppose I haven’t had a chance to talk to her earlier today as I was out of the house from 5:30pm with James, Terry and his family for Terry’s 21st. Must make sure I give her a ring later on today before we go out to Isis. I’ve not been to Isis before, despite it being the main student haunt and now being in my third year. Still, most of the karting squad are going, and my housemates too, AND I get free entry courtesy of my VIP pass for being Motorsport Club President. Worth a go I reckon. Still stressing about the amount of work still to be done this year if I want to get a 2:1. I still need to average 65% in my exams, not an easy task! I will get some work done in the morning on C++, and possibly some dissertation coding, and I will read/make some notes for Business School modules. I will… Also, what the fuck is the noise coming from downstairs?

It’s The Magical Mystery Tour!

Phew, I’ve been on a whistle stop tour over the weekend. First on Friday I went down to visit Fran in Oxford. It was great to see her as I’ve only seen her for one day out of the last 3 weeks I think, and I doubt I’ll get to see her until the 15th now, and even for a couple of days as I’ve got so-o-o-o-o much work to do!Then it was on up to Cheshire for my Aunt’s 50th birthday, which meant a big family get together. Had a lovely meal at a pub called the Butley Ash (hur hur), and then had to share a room with my grandparents, which meant I got all of 5 hours sleep as they are both restless sleepers, with my Nan pacing the room from 5am onwards. Must make a start on coursework this week, while doing more of Connect, and reading books and making notes. So much to do, so little time left!
